Today's Panchang

All five limbs of today's panchang: Tithi, Vara, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana. Computed with precise astronomical calculations for your city.

What is Panchang?

Panchang is the foundation of the Vedic calendar with five limbs: Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (Moon's position), Yoga (Sun-Moon combination) and Karana (half tithi). Knowledge of all five is essential for any auspicious work.

Tithi

The angle between Moon and Sun; a new tithi every 12 degrees.

Vara

Day of the week; each day has a planetary ruler.

Nakshatra

Moon's current position among the 27 lunar mansions.

Yoga

Sum of the longitudes of Sun and Moon, divided into 27 parts.

Karana

Half a tithi. There are two karanas in each day.

FAQ

Questions about panchang

Why does panchang change every day? +

Tithi, nakshatra, yoga, and karana all track the Moon and Sun as they move, and that motion shifts a little every day. So panchang changes daily, and also changes slightly by city.

Does panchang differ by city? +

Yes. The exact moment a tithi or nakshatra changes depends on a city’s latitude, longitude, and time zone, so two cities can show slightly different panchang on the same calendar day.

What role does panchang play in picking a muhurat? +

Any auspicious muhurat is fixed by weighing all five limbs together; for example, a Rikta tithi or a Bhadra karana is typically avoided for new beginnings. For a full wedding muhurat, see our muhurat service.
